Anston Stones Wood

From Anston parish hall carpark 26 of us set off in the sunshine, climbing the only hill on today's walk upto Hodgkin's field, where we walked across to Rackford road making our way right to Rackford farm. Crossing the stone stile up past several horse fields, all of the horses appropriately togged out in their winter coats. From the following fields we could see right across towards Woodsetts and beyond. It was quite breezy and unfortunately the weather changed to become quite wet and windy. We then doubled back towards Anston Stones taking a short break for refreshments in a beautiful dell. Proceeding down the steep deep steps to cross the brook, the wild garlic was sprouting up in abundance. We chatted about the medieval history of Anston Stones and the smugglers hideout in Dead man's cave, which unfortunately we were unable to locate, perhaps a task for another day. After returning to the car park we enjoyed the hospitality at The Leeds Arms South Anston feasting on delicious hot roast pork sandwiches which were ordered from a local family butcher.
