Almost 20 years ago, this was the very first walk I led for the club. Couldn’t read a map, didn’t possess a map, not a clue - somethings don’t change! Fortunately my carer guided me through. Anyway, 23 of us set off from Hathersage on a lovely sunny autumn morning, past the village cricket club and across the fields to Birtley Lane and Brontë Cottage (named to honour the visit of Charlotte Brontë in 1845, whilst visiting her friend Ellen Nussey she was inspired to write Jane Eyre). Upwards and onwards to North Lees Hall [believed to have inspired Thornfield Hall]. We then climbed up to Stanage Edge where we had our morning break. We then headed along the ridge, past the Trig Point and down to Upper Burbage Bridge. Higger Tor was the next destination then down and up to Carl Wark (allegedly an Iron Age hill fort)], here we stopped for lunch. After lunch we dropped down into the Longshaw Estate and Padley Gorge. Turning right at the bottom past Padley Chapel we crossed over the railway bridge and along the fields and down through the wood to the River Derwent, eventually reaching the road near Leadmill Bridge and back to Hathersage. Replenishment fluid was taken at the Little John in Hathersage.
