29 of us met in the New York Stadium car park on a much milder day than anticipated for our walk into the Sheffield canal basin. We were soon joined by a further 2 walkers and a dog (is a walk ever complete without a dog) as we proceeded through Ickles lock, enjoying the wildlife including a wary heron that kept a keen eye on us, before all pausing for our coffee break at Tinsley lock to admire the new art installation of a looping canal boat. This rather strange but beautiful work by artist Alex Chinneck was commissioned by Sheffield City Council on behalf of the Tinsley Art Project. It was then full steam ahead to the canal basin which included a short diversion along the industrial backstreets of Sheffield due to a part of the footpath being closed following a recent bank collapse. The 6.1/2-mile journey concluded in Sheffield’s rather fine canal basin with refreshments being taken at the Bankers Draft before taking the tram back to Rotherham. Several members enjoyed the walk so much that they then walked back to Rotherham taking in parts of the 5 Weirs walk. Thanks to all came on the walk and praise to John for back marking and ensuring no one was lost to the murky waters of the canal.
