Wharncliffe Crags and Chase from Grenoside

After extracting ourselves from the Dog Show fraternity, 22 members set off from Grenoside in dry conditions. We passed through Wheeta Wood and downhill around Prior Royd, eventually reaching the ladder stile onto the Chase. Upon reaching the Crags we paused for elevenses, in the sunshine(!), with views towards More Hall and Broomhead Reservoirs. This area used to be known as Wantley, where the mythical Dragon roamed - by coincidence there is an article in this month’s Country Walking magazine, see attached file. We continued along the edges, it was not too bad underfoot - considering it’s mid-Feb. Slight uphill through the woods for the lunch stop with views over Stocksbridge. The sun was still out though there was a cool breeze. (Blades 2-0 up at this stage!) Onward through Moorside Farm passing Wharncliffe Reservoir and then back on to the Chase. Heading ‘home’ through Greno and Wheata Woods. Replenishment fluid was taken at the Red Lion - sat outside in the sunshine!
